O’Donoghue’s Pub on Merrion Row is one of Dublin’s iconic traditional bars. In 1934 Paddy and Maureen O’Donoghue began running this establishment. It was during this time the place became famous for its nightly traditional Irish music sessions. In the early 1960s, it became a legendary hub for folk musicians, most notably The Dubliners, who were basically founded amid the haze of cigarette smoke and the clinking of Guinness glasses. The Dubliners went on to achieve world fame and while other members came and went, the core group was composed of Luke Kelly, Ronnie Drew, John Sheahan and Barney McKenna. Traditional music sessions are still held here seven nights a week along with other more contemporary and unique live performances as well. Its walls are adorned with photographs of many of the famous musicians who played here.
