Jewish Dublin

01.01.25 – 31.12.25

There has been a Jewish presence in Dublin for hundreds of years but immigration of persecuted Jews from mostly Lithuania in the late 19th century brought the numbers from a couple of hundred up to nearly 5,000. Most of these new arrivals settled in an area of Dublin which is officially called Portobello but gained for itself the nickname of Little Jerusalem. The Jewish community got on well with their gentile neighbours and gradually the Jewish immigrants assimilated and contributed hugely to Irish society.

Take A Closer Look

Today, the area no longer supports a Jewish population as they have since mostly emigrated to Isreal or America or moved to the Dublin suburbs. However, but there are several physical reminders of their former presence and, of course, there are many wonderful and surprising stories to be told. A visit to the remarkable Jewish Museum, a one-time synagogue, can also be arranged and is highly recommended. This area is slightly outside the city centre but depending on where you are staying, we can either walk there, go by public transport or take a taxi. If you are on the typical 3-hour tour, we will be walking or bussing to the former Viking & Medieval Quarter as the usual visit time to Little Jerusalem is only 90 minutes.

Places we will see or pass by

  • Former home of Chaim Herzog
  • “Birthplace” of Leopold Bloom from Ulysses
  • The Bretzel Bakery
  • Former synagogue on Walworth Road (now the Irish Jewish Museum)

Relevant self-guided or guided visits

  • Irish Jewish Museum
  • The cost for a private visit to the Jewish Museum is €75. This is the only way to visit the museum except for the only public opening hours on Sundays, when the donation is €10.
  • We can arrange other visits if your tour time exceeds 3 hours. Our team will be happy to recommend suitable guided and self-guided visit options.
