‘A treat from the heart of Grafton Street’
Bewley’s is a family-owned Irish company with a long and fascinating history, spanning over 175 years. This tour will begin with the origins of the company in 1840 when the Bewley family chartered the Hellas, the first ship ever to sail directly from China to Dún Laoghaire, filled with Ireland’s first taste of Chinese tea leaves. We will take you through the entire journey, to fully appreciate the heritage and the beautiful surrounds of the historic Bewley’s Grafton Street.
Bewley’s Grafton Street delights the senses. Discover the many unique elements of the original café, such as the Harry Clarke windows, ten beautiful open fireplaces and the Egyptian-motifed façades on Grafton Street and Johnson’s Court. Today the café is filled with lovingly curated art, including recent additions of stained glass art from Pauline Bewick and Jim Fitzpatrick and wonderfully sensitive sculptures from Paddy Campbell and Eamonn Ceannt.
At the core of Bewley’s is a never-ending desire to provide the best. Bewley’s Grafton Street was built to rival the finest tea-rooms in Europe and to this day it is one of Dublin’s most iconic and celebrated landmarks. Bewley’s have retained their dedication to what made them famous: serving the very best teas, coffees and baked goods the world over.
The Bewley’s story is as much about Dublin as it is about Bewley’s. In the words of Irish poet, author and Professor Emeritus of Trinity College Dublin, Brendan Kennelly, “Bewley’s is the heart and the hearth of Dublin. There is a sense in which Dubliners behave like a large, sometimes unruly family; and walking into Bewley’s never fails to give me the feeling that I am stepping into a home… The atmosphere is full of a lovely rattling music made up of cups and chatter, gossip and laughter, watchful eyes and gadabout tongues.”
