Famous Highlights & Hidden Corners of Dublin from 1st April 2014
This tour comprises many of the best-known sights and historic places (including the Viking & Medieval Quarter) as well as some of the more hidden or forgotten gems of the city.
Dublin has so many great places to see, all with their own intriguing stories and history, but it is very difficult to see them all, even over a few days. In this great two and a half-hour tour we will fit in as many of the city centre’s most notable and historic highlights as possible. The first part of the walk will include the Powerscourt Townhouse, a Georgian (18th century) mansion converted into a delightful craft shopping centre. Then we will cross through the Grafton Street shopping area and its interesting side streets before entering into the squares of Trinity College, Ireland’s oldest university. In the next segment, we will call by the splendid Bank of Ireland (the former 18th century Houses of Parliament) and we will visit the House of Lords whenever it is open (usually during normal banking hours). Next, we will explore the cultural and entertainment quarter of Temple Bar before crossing the River Liffey over the iconic Ha’penny Bridge and then re-crossing on the Millennium Bridge to visit more of Temple Bar before entering into the magnificent City Hall. The last part of the tour will take you into the courtyards and garden of Dublin Castle* and past the Chester Beatty Library, one of Europe’s most extraordinary little museums. Almost just as important are the lesser well-known places which we will wander in and out of, weaving facts and anecdotes (all true, of course!) with the history and the architecture. Heading into the Viking and Medieval quarter the tour will finish in the grounds of the 11th century Christ Church Cathedral to hear some of its fascinating stories and the part it played and continues to play in the life of the city.
At the end of the tour your ticket will offer you discounts in The Church Café/ Bar (20% of bar menu), the Abbey Theatre (10% off ticket price) and Bewley’s Café (10% off menu).
